Public Democracy LA to Host Historic Mini-Assembly on Charter Reform

Public Democracy LA has been authorized by the Los Angeles Charter Review Commission to conduct two mini-assemblies as part of Los Angeles' charter reform process—a major milestone in bringing everyday Angelenos into the heart of how our city is governed.

The first mini-assembly will take place Saturday, December 13 at the Institute of Contemporary Art LA. Forty Angelenos, selected by lottery from 300 volunteers to reflect the city's demographic diversity, will deliberate on how land use decisions are made in Los Angeles—one of the most consequential questions facing our city.

Participants will hear expert testimony, deliberate together, and develop recommendations free from lobbyists, political pressure, and career interests. The Charter Reform Commission has pledged to consider what emerges from these assemblies, giving ordinary residents real influence over the city's fundamental governing document.

The Commission endorsed the civic assembly plan—developed by RewriteLA, a coalition that includes Public Democracy LA—on October 8 and formalized their support in a written statement on October 29. "The Charter Reform Commission is excited to see the Assemblies provide another avenue for Angelenos to express what they want to see in our City government," said Commission Chair Ray Meza.

With additional private funding, ReWrite LA hopes to organize a full-scale civic assembly that can tackle broader charter reform questions.
